Blog Post #9
For this past week, I can genuinely say that I am very proud of the progress I have made! In
general, I have caught up on a lot of the projects I have been working on, and everything has been going to plan. In ceramics this week, I have gotten quite a bit done on my final project! Not to jinx myself, but I think I will be able to get everything assembled and ready for wetware cutoff coming up! This project has been so much fun to work on and has allowed me to experiment with hand building and throwing on the pottery wheel. I always get nervous using the wheel and have tried to avoid it all semester. But, I really wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and give it another try. To my surprise, it went very well! I think having parts that are thrown and hand built really adds to the overall feel of the piece I am working on. Having very smooth and geometric shapes along with organic forms that create the lava really balances out the piece in a fun and interesting way.
Next, I will need to figure out what I want to do with it as far as glazing. I got some really great suggestions from my classmates that I want to experiment with. I wanted to find an underglaze or a glaze that is neon, or close to neon. One of my classmates informed me that there are UV reactive glazes that I could check out. I thought that was a really cool idea! I have not decided on exactly what I want to do yet, but the possibilities feel endless! Once I have everything assembled, I will work on figuring that out next. Below is an update of what I have done so far. Overall, I love how it has turned out so far and cannot wait to see and share the finished result!
